Political economy is a living tradition in communication research, one that responds to changes in material conditions and to upheavals in intellectual life. This chapter demonstrates this by addressing five current trends in the political economy of communication, including the globalization of political economy research, a new turn in an enduring emphasis on historical research, a shift to alternative standpoints, especially feminism and labour, the transition from an emphasis on old media to new media, and expansion in political activism. None of these is an entirely new tendency; rather, each builds on existing tendencies which were often submerged beneath dominant trends in the field (Mosco, 2009).
This publication arises from the political economy section of the International Association of Media Communication Research (IAMCR). It showcases original research from established and emerging scholars and commentaries on contemporary media-related issues. The journal especially invites contributions which reflect upon the political economy of communication as an evolving field of intellectual inquiry.
Political economy is often characterized as studying how different types of values are produced, distributed, exchanged and consumed; how power is produced, distributed, exchanged, and used; and finally, how these aspects are related (Graham). Political economy of communications (PEC) focuses on structures for the production of the media and communication industries under capitalism; on thethe production and consumption of media and communications; and on flows of information. 2b1af7f3a8
