It turns out that the Java Installer is the primary problem here. Simply running the “setup_Arduino_ERW_1.0.5_20130524_no-java.zip” by double-clicking on it will allow you to complete the setup and get Arduino up and running. The install managed to get an older version of Java 7 onto the Arduino Installer, which is why it worked if you could get the Java Installer alone up and running. It can be downloaded here.
I’m unsure if the former steps above fixed it, but leaving it on for the time being (but only uninstalling it) did not cause the issue to cause it again! If you managed to get this working please share your experience and any tips – I’m still unclear why it didn’t happen for you.
I have the same issue. When I open arduino my java is version 7. I decided to uninstall Java 7 from the control panel, to see if that was the problem. After I opened arduino (using the zip file) and entered the serial, all of my Settings were gone! I got a “Arduino Timeline is empty or null” error. I reinstalled arduino and opened it with the zip file and saved bookmarks. Now it works, but when I reopen the serial it goes back to the error. Last time I tried, arduino.exe crashes and I have to restart my computer to get it to work every time. I have arduino open right now, will try and see if it happens again. d2c66b5586
